Last September, I hosted a surprise birthday party for Rene, and one of my guests, my dear friend Alice Jackson, treated me to a little surprise of her own: a copy of Hana Sushi.

This delightful cookbook contains instructions for dozens of exquisitely decorative and whimsically clever modes of sushi rolls, with excellent and practically foolproof instructions for reproducing them in your own kitchen. And now, seven months later, I’ve finally had the chance to put Alice’s thoughtful gift to practical use.

One of the loveliest items in Hana Sushi is a little gem called Salmon Temari Sushi. Mine turned out nearly as pretty as the picture in the book, and I’m sure, was as delicious.

And what a fitting coincidence that this particular dish coincided with today's Easter celebration. I can almost picture it sitting pretty in a basket, right next to a family of marshmallow peeps and a big ol' chocolate bunny.
