The low temperature here in the Napa Valley is nearing the freezing mark for the first time this season, and cooler temperatures call for warming soups. My very favorite breakfast in the world is Japanese style: Miso soup, dried fish, and Japanese pickles. I may not have any dried fish or Japanese pickles lying about in my pantry, but I always keep the makings for miso soup on hand. Tofu, bonito flakes, miso paste, and wakame seaweed flakes. It's the kindest way to start your day.
