About Before the Rains

Chopstick Cinema

This Week's Film: Before the Rains
Cuisine: Indian

Although I have yet to watch Before the Rains, this film has much to recommend it. Director Santosh Sivan has a long history as a cinematographer, including the seductively exotic Mistress of Spices. Linus Roache is one of my favorite new television faces, best known for his role as ADA Michael Cutter on NBC’s Law & Order. The story is adapted from a screenplay by Dan Varete for an award-winning Israeli film titled Asphalt Zahov. And leading lady Nandita Das has an impressive CV as an actress, and recently won an award at San Jose’s Cinequest Film Festival for her directorial debut Firaaq.

Before the Rains is set in Kerala, India in 1937, where spice merchant Henry Moores has come to establish a plantation and to build an access road to it. In the process, he engages in an extramarital affair with his housekeeper Sajani. Can’t wait to watch it.

My film review will be posted at the end of the week, along with my Indian recipe. For questions or comments send e-mail to cheiter at thingsasian dot com
