About Turtles Can Fly

Chopstick Cinema

This Week's Film: Turtles Can Fly
Cuisine: Iraqi

Written and directed by Bahman Ghobadi, Turtles Can Fly stars a cast of absolute beginners, children who were once Iraqi refugees themselves. As the first film made in Iraq since Saddam Hussein was captured and removed from power, the story takes place near the border of Iraq and Turkey in the days and hours before the U.S. invasion in 2003. The invasion was launched on the New Year holiday known as Nowruz, celebrated by the Kurdish population of Iraq. Turtles Can Fly received awards and nominations at film festivals all over the world, and was Iran’s entry for the 2004 Academy Awards.

My film review will be posted at the end of the week, along with my Iraqi recipe. For questions or comments send e-mail to cheiter at thingsasian dot com
