Casual Friday: Buddha’s Birthday
Today is the celebration of Buddha’s Birthday in many countries throughout Asia. Everywhere except Japan, the observance is held on the 8th day of the 4th month on the Chinese lunar calendar, therefore the date varies from year to year on the Gregorian calendar. In Japan, the event is observed on April 8 or May 8. In Hong Kong, Macau, and South Korea, Buddha’s Birthday is a national holiday. In some countries, the celebration is delayed until the day of the full moon.
I usually celebrate Buddha’s Birthday on April 8, according to the Japanese calendar. But since it’s such a significant holiday throughout the rest of Asia today, I thought it deserved a mention in today’s post.
